Ever wish there was a way to get an awesome total body workout AND relax at the same time?
A fantasy, right? Nope!
There is an amazing summertime activity that comes pretty darn close! (And you’re going to love it!)
Stand Up Paddle Boarding (or SUP) has become insanely popular the past few years. Surfers and athletes use it for conditioning between training sessions and celebrities swear by it.
And for good reason.
A cross between surfing and kayaking, SUP is unique in that it combines core work, cardio, flexibility and balance training in one incredibly low impact (and fun!) activity. You may not even feel like you’re exercising while paddling around but rest assured— you are getting one heck of a total body workout. Standing on the board requires balance, requiring core stability from your abs and back while also working the leg muscles. Paddling along the open water gives your arms, back and shoulders an amazing workout too!
A SUP workout also offers the ultimate in flexibility.
You alone control the intensity of your workout on a stand up paddle board. Need to de- stress after a day of screamy children? Take a relaxing, gentle glide across the lake for some mental relaxation. Need a more intense workout? Go for a power paddle to burn max calories.
You can paddle board on just about any surface of water making it a very accessible sport for everyone— all ages, body types, fitness levels or athletic prowess. Starting on the calm waters of a lake is best for beginners and if you’re still a bit hesitant, why not start with a lesson to get set-up with the proper size board and form.
SUP is one of my favorite summer activities and how I started to be active after having a baby. There is nothing more relaxing than gliding along the water, sun sparkling off the surface with just the sound of your paddle and no demanding children in sight!!

It makes for a fun family outing or when mama needs some alone time to clear her mind and is the perfect outdoor activity if you’re looking to try something new.
If you haven’t tried SUP yet- Give it a go!

Have you tried SUP yet? What did you think?
Nice little writeup on SUP. I agree, it’s both a good challenge/workout, and relaxing at the same time. I’ll often push hard for while, then just lay down and float around.
Yes! It can be SO relaxing too to just float, breathe and let your mind wander…
I would love to try that one of these days especially that now summer has just begun. By the way, do you accept guest posts?
It is a great combination of thrill and relaxation. I can’t wait to try it again now that summer is just around.
